The results here are about what I expected. This was not intended to be an attack on tempo training.....thread to follow.... https://twitter.com/HFJumps/status/1354426420798349314
To those who replied "both" in some format - I hear you, but that was not the intent of the survey. The intent was to ask what you feel "missing" from most training programs.
While I certainly understand this is an "it depends" situation on the sport and/or event within the sport, what I still continue to see is a lack of exposure to true sprinting.
Whether it is youth practices at local parks or the training within various high school sports, I see athletes living in the middle ground - never being exposed to high intensities.
I think the best thing we can do (especially with youth) is have them do things as intense as possible, and sort the technique out as we go. In baseball or golf - practice swinging REALLY hard....when running - SPRINT!
They won't hit their ceiling if you don't practice raising the ceiling!
That being said, I do see value in tempo training. I think there are a variety of ways to do it as some of the comments mentioned.
My thread has been full of people advocating for tempo training lately....and that's cool....most are from people who understand the value of sprinting and apply it well. I appreciate the content they put out regarding tempo.
I'm just serving the reminder that the bigger global issue IMO is that sprint ability is still being underdeveloped from youth - high school athletes....because not a high enough percentage is being exposed to the stimulus!
