I was trying to reply to a thread from @SSKedreporter but I am new to twitter and could not figure it out haha. But they were sharing a complaining email from a parent saying Black and Brown parents are being bullied into not returning.... @CTULocal1
(2)The truth is the thing that people don't want to talk about is this...
it is true that many Black and Brown communities who make up the working class that keeps the city running is in desperate need for relief. But here's the difference.
(3) Our schools were so inequitable to begin with an it's just amplified with this. We see how schools who have resources are like " oh we can buy the teachers things they need to be safe", " what do yall need to get back in the building"
(4) the whole focus is how can they use their resources to benefit them, because chunks of our city have an individual mindset. Because white supremacy and capitalism have trained people to think in such way. Because for to long folx have viewed
(5) things as a moral failing that are a societal failing and this is something we see especially in wealthier communities. People ( white folx) have said well if Black and Brown people are in such a need during this pandemic why are they
(6) not senind their children in? "It must be because they are bullied." These statments are rooted in white supremacy and the belief that Black and Brown people can not make decisions that are best for their families. Ima tell you what it really is...
(7) It is NOT because they are bullied or not educated enough to make decisions it is because EVEN THOUGH it is hard, even though they need relief they understand COMMUNITY at their core. It is because we have community it is embedded in so much of norms and culture
(8) because it has been key to our survival. We have kept us safe through hundreds of years of intentional oppression. We have built communities. So this manifests in different ways.

A. We have community to call on in times of need. We have aunts, uncles, grandmas and friends
(9) who we trust to care for our young. we raise them with community. We have help and though it is a struggle for us all we are all looking out for each other.

B. we deeply care for our community and view many things through that lens.
(10) so we know that even though this is super hard THE MOST important thing is living through this. We know this in a real way because our communities have been devestated by it. We know that as members of a community it is not always about what is
(11) best for me but best for we. LIVING IS THE GOAL. For many wealthy white people in the city that is now how they live and make decisions. They've been impacted differently than many Black, Brown & disenfranchised communities. They don't feel this fear so it isnt a of concern
(12) That is a hard thing to hear and reflect on but it is true. I am hearing constantly of parents with resources at different schools rallying together talking about " we should focus on our school." Those are the say" me parents who at the height of pandemic were saying we
(13) " should just open schools with low infection rates." which SURPRISE were wealthy white neighborhoods. Those same people will then WEAPONIZE equity to get what benefits them. Do yall not see how inequitable that is?
(14) Our schools were never equitable. You got schools in Lakeview and Lincoln Park literally raising tens of thousands of dollars at fundraisers. You got elementary schools requesting $5,000 at EOY per each child. One to one devices, huge events... Meanwhile in East Garfield
(15) an many other schools we got classes packed with 34 students. 2-3 Ipad carts the entire school shares. Raising not even a 10th of what wealthier schools raise in fundraisers. Those are different experiences PRE pandemic. Those same schools are
(16) are offering to buy their schools and teachers things that the DISTRICT should be providing city wide... which means those schools and teachers are going to be safer than other schools and teachers in the SAME DISTRICT. THAT IS NOT EQUITY.
(17) so yea @SSKedreporter you have not heard many people use that language other than wealthier white folx for those reasons.
