On #BellLetsTalk , I see stories breaking down the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety.

While this is amazing work, mental health is broader.

In my med school advocacy class I made this point, wanting to destigmatize psychosis. I was told "schizophrenia is scary". 1/
A doctor and a social worker gave me this feedback - people who are very familiar with the spectrum of mental illnesses.

This was at a time a loved one of mine was hospitalized in psychosis - I didn't know what to say.

He was and continues to be loving and kind, not scary. 2/
This year in thinking about the stigma around mental health, broaden your definition. Find compassion for the whole spectrum.

The biases against psychosis and mania run deep and often leave people with these diagnoses at the margins of society. 3/
Moreover the research into these diseases is comparatively underfunded.

Today question whatever biases you may hold and consider donating : https://schizophrenia.ca

Stay safe, be kind, find compassion ❤️
