The cold start problem

I used to struggle w/ not knowing what to tweet about consistently

Impostor syndrome, feeling lost & self-doubt paralyzed me

Then after months of lurking, I simply decided “Enough is enough” & began my own path on Twitter

Here are my top lessons 🧵
The cold start problem is not uncommon

Don’t stare at a blank page for too long, just jump in

Write from the POV of a teacher — what are some things that are obvious to me now which might be useful to the 5 yrs ago me?

For ex: This thread, 5 years ago I had 0 followers 🤯
Write to express, not impress

Many people have the automatic to habit of “impressing others” on Twitter

Why? Because that’s a widely common behavior

But to simply stand out, have the audacity to be authentic & humble

Trying to impress others is performance anxiety, be you
Do what’s slightly harder than usual

Millions of people simply pick the lowest hanging fruit (tweet 140 or 280 characters) and expect to blow up. Unlikely!

Turn to Twitter threads — they take 20 min so publish once/week to build up the muscle

Experiment w different formats
Impostor syndrome is real

Acknowledge it, embrace it and let it go by dropping your expectations

A very Buddhist take I know

But who cares? Who’s keeping score of how many likes or RTs your first thread or 45th tweet got?

Savor the moment, the ability to write & teach
Self-doubt is the biggest barrier while writing

Write NOT to stand out as an authority but someone with a sense of curiosity

That way if people show you new information, you can be open to changing your mind

Writing allows your reflect in public but don’t be too attached
Lastly, read widely and source from the best

A lot of my creative input come from following insightful accounts, learning from their execution and trying it on my own

Thanks to @david_perell @Julian @jackbutcher @businessbarista for being my unpaid Internet teachers :)

🙏
I have a long way to go before I can crush it on Twitter but just like many of you, I’m learning to put in reps and sets and practice in public

Content doesn’t have to be too sophisticated. In a sea of noise, be simple & honest.
