Another pre-cursor #Stahlhelm thread & answer to yesterday’s question.

Firstly, congratulations to those who correctly called this as a ‘Gaede’ helmet.

A limited number, field designed solution, driven by hard learned necessity.

1)
It was developed in 1915 within Armee Abteilung ‘Gaede’, commanded by General der Infanterie Hans Gaede, who’s men suffered greatly in the Vosges region due to head wounds caused by artillery strikes amongst the rocky landscape.

2)
The driving force behind the research, design & production was Oberst Leutnant Hesse, Gaede’s Chief of Staff.

After deciding upon the final design, c.1,500 were made in the Group’s Artillery factory in Mühlhausen.

3)
It weighed over 2kgs & as such, the nose piece was included to aid balance whilst wearing.

Upon the introduction of the M16 #Stahlhelm they were largely melted down, hence are rare.

The next thread will be on the Stahlhelm proper.
