Would South Africans be able to fight off a kangaroo invasion?
[Thread]
This thread is inspired by the following text: “There are 48 million kangaroos in Australia and 3,457,380 inhabitants in Uruguay. So if the kangaroo decide to invade Uruguay, each Urugayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos”
According to our most recent national census (2011), South Africa has a population of 51 million people. So we can assume that we outnumber the Australian kangaroos. Stats SA’s 2018 data has us at 58 million people so we’ll go with this figure.
However, we can’t simply assume that every person is capable of fighting a kangaroo.

The average red kangaroo stands at 1.5m. The average South African woman stands at 1.58m and the average South African man stands at 1.66m. So, we have a height advantage.
In times of war, it is usually the case that children are not accepted into the army. There are around 32 million people 19 y.o. and above in South Africa.

So, there’s a difference of around 18 million between the kangaroo population and our adult population.

Every adult would have to fight 1.5 kangaroos.
According to this article, kangaroos regularly beat humans in boxing matches.

*disclaimer: I do not support kangaroo fighting.
All this leads me to the conclusion that were the Australian kangaroos to invade South Africa. We’d be screwed.

I hope you’ve prepared for this eventuality and have taken the steps to safeguard the country against such. @CyrilRamaphosa @SANDFCorpEvents @SANParks
