Things that are helping me this January. A thread, I’ll add if I think of any more.
(please do add to it too if you can share any that are working for you -we all need a boost I think)

1, Daffodils
I know not everyone has money for flowers but if you do have a spare quid (sainsbobs price) I think they deliver disproportionate value for money. Buy in bud & watch them open their sunshine hooters & let them lift your soul a little. Here’s mine (buds yesterday).

2, Samuel Pepys Diary
Ok, so it’s my favourite book but also it’s perfect for now. Written over 10yr, some of it in a time of plague it feels super relevant now. Also diary format delivers manageable sized reading chunks if your brain is all befuzzled by zoom/woe/fear/ill health.

3, Blood oranges
One of the few things that can still only be bought in season (Jan & Feb)
They’re a beautiful, edible, delicious reminder that this time, though dragging, is also fleeting. There’s still some carpe diem stuff out there. (Poor photo as I was impatient to monch)

4, Seeds on a sunny shelf just give & give. I’m growing sunflowers, nasturtiums, fennel, sweet pea, aquilegia, chives & electric buzz flowers. The thought that by summer these dots’ll be veg or flowers feed a sense of hope & plan-making that can feel absent in these times.
5, Walking (we’ve all done a lot , right?) started to feel a bit weird & forced, like yard time in prison. So I started looking for a specific thing, like how many a sorts of
can I see, or making it a smell safari. It’s given me new worlds to visit inside the same old routes.
