THREAD: The Masterclasses of Txiki Begiristain
Txiki Begiristain was appointed as Director of Football at Manchester City in October 2012, and has since completed many incredible signings for the club. Despite this, Txiki has come in for a lot of criticism from City fans, but this thread is to show how unjustified that is.
Starting off with his first signing. Fernandinho in 2013 for a mere 30 million pounds. 332 appearances and 3 league titles later, it's safe to say he was one of the bargains of the decade, mainly due to his unmatched consistency as Man City's main defensive midfielder.
Next up was the 15 million coup of Jesus Navas. A tidy little player with blistering pace, Navas filled in at both RW and RB when needed and racked up 183 appearances for the blues. Overall, a consistently quality player along with an incredibly low pricetag. Amazing deal.
A deal and a player that seriously go under the radar. The 20 million signing of Alvaro Negredo, a player who formed a lethal partnership with Sergio Aguero on City's way to a league and cup double in 2013/14. Brilliant business.
Another underrated deal from that summer. Martin Demichelis on a free transfer. He played 27 games on City's way to the title, and looked overall like a good player despite some shaky moments.
12 million pounds for Fernando Reges. Some may argue he was average, but 12 million pounds seems like a bargain these days, especially considering the fact that he played 102 times for City. Good deal.
A lovely man and decent player who brought experience to the team. Bacary Sagna on a free transfer was completely worth it, as the Frenchman played 86 times for City, and was especially crucial in the 15/16 season as Pablo Zabaleta started to age.
KDB. 55 million. I don't need to explain.
Raheem Sterling for just 44 million pounds. 268 games for the blues with 108 goals scored. Absolutely crucial to City between 2017 and 2019, with his qualities still being visible to the eye nowadays. Bargain.
Fabian Delph for just 8 million. An incredible leader and an incredibly consistent player, Delph proved on and off the pitch that he brought so much to the team, especially during the 17/18 season when he filled in at left back as City stormed their way to 100 points.
Nicolas Otamendi. An exceptional player on his day, the general played 210 times for the blues and always gave it his all. He was absolutely pivotal for City on their way to 100 points in the 17/18 season, it's just a shame how it ended for Nico.
The most important signing of the Txiki era. Pep Guardiola. The list of records we hold due to this man is incredible. 2 titles and possibly a 3rd coming, 3 league cups, 1 fa cup and a domestic quadruple, it's safe to say we wouldn't be anywhere near as good without Pep.
Mr Whippy for just 20 million pounds. Unbelievably good player despite being struck down with injury on several occasions. Gundogan has always fought for the badge, showing passion on the pitch and giving it his all, and he has really come into a purple patch this season.
What a deal. Bought Melbourne City FC for 7mil. Took Mooy and sold him for 9. Proper business.
Not the best player, but an amazing price tag compared to his output. Zinchenko cost City just 1.7 million, and he has since filled in at the unnatural role of left back when needed especially on the way to the domestic quad, always showing great passion for the team. Bargain.
Good deal. Unpopular player.
The stats are there to show what a bargain Gabriel Jesus was at a measly 27 million. An incredible spot from the scouting department, Jesus was spotted at Palmeiras and had several clubs fighting for his signature, but he chose City and hasn't looked back since. Brilliant.
Bernardo Silva, 43 million. An integral part of the side, especially since 18/19, Bernardo has continually dazzled defences worldwide and has fully justified his price tag. Covers every blade of grass, fights for every ball. Winner.
Incredibly signing, incredibly scouted. Ederson from Benfica for just 35million proves to be a bigger bargain as the months go by. He is vital to City's build up play and Pep's overall style, and he has been crucial to City's recent success.
Great signing, although possibly a bit overpriced at the time. Kyle Walker signed for 45 million in 2017, and has been City's main RB for most of the time since. He has been distracted by off field issues however, and has since been dropped quite often. Good signing overall.
Aymeric fucking Laporte. Unbelievable signing. 57 million pounds brought Laporte to City, with the deal being completed out of nowhere with Txiki flying to Bilbao to get it done. His impact was unbelievable in 18/19, though as of late he has not been on top form. Fantastic.
One of the best swap deals in history. Joao Cancelo arrived at the Etihad for 25 million pounds with Danilo going the other way to Juventus, and Joao has shown his incredible technical ability as of late, having been the best fullback in England this season. Masterclass.
Jury is still out on Ferran, but 21 million pounds seems to be a bargain. He was for a decently long time City's top scorer this season, and seems to be a good heir to the void Leroy Sane left behind, and will only get better with time. Great signing.
Dias. 45 million with Otamendi going the other way. No words. Absolute masterclass from Txiki.
STILL TO BE JUDGED
Rodri - 63m
Benjamin Mendy - 52m
Claudio Gomes - Free
Nathan Ake - 41m
John Stones - 47.5m
NOTABLE OUTGOINGS
Enes Unal - 12m
Kelechi Iheanacho - 25m
Wilfried Bony - 12m
Angus Gunn - 10m
Overall, Txiki Begiristain has created a revolution at City. He may have made some minor transfer mistakes, but there is no denying that he has created a dynasty at Manchester City. More respect is needed towards him.
