This is an incredibly sensationalized framing of an issue that omits multiple issues of importance; it has clearly ignored the contextual historical tracing of how we have come to this point. Nick mentions Sewell, but acts like Sewell has popped up out of nowhere in the grampians
The audience needs to know historically that Sewell can be traced back to the UPF, the "patriot" manifestation of his Right Wing politics. Omitting his history is deliberately misleading the audience of the dangers of these ideologies from their early onset, and what they become.
Whilst Sewell is mentioned, there is no definitive naming of the group, shrouding the grampian Nazis in mystique as if their threat is not imminent and instead random one of bursts, framing them as concerning, but not actually present on a day to day basis.
Whilst affiliated groups are mentioned, the omission of a concrete lineage tracing means the audience can't comprehend how we have come to this point, and learn the dangers of how this has happened.
There is also a questionable pro Police, Pro state intelligence rhetoric in his reporting. That ASIO spends "40%" of their resources on right wing terrorism (and what has this achieved?)And the "prompt" police response (despite locals needing to gather the intelligence themselves)
The reason we have the information and Intel is because of the incredibly hard work of Anti Fascists, who have worked tirelessly to compile and publish online (seeking no reward whatsoever)
Yet the piece at no point credits this whatsoever, and it is incredibly evident that the information comes from the tireless work of Anti Fascists. This has shifted the issue from community to self defence to one of Journalistic ego, clout and self importance.
The audience has a right to have intel presented to them in a manner in which they understand the gravity of these situations, and have the information be contextualized for them through the framework of actively fighting fascism, and not sensationalized bogey man reporting.
Fascism is a danger, one that the community should be thoroughly educated on, so they have tbe capacity to recognise and organise against it. Not just fodder to consume at entertainment value.
Furthermore and the last point I'll probs discuss, the framing of Fascism in our community as an issue of policing is excluding the cou ntless years of work and dedication put into Anti Fascism by the broad collective of community individuals and neglects their value.
Instead it opts to pursue the narrative that fascism can be fought and controlled by security agencies and policing institutions that simultaneously shut down liberation based social movements. My enemies enemy is not my friend.
Oh and lastly, if any Nazi or journo wants to shape up to me about this, be prepared to leave in a body bag. I'm not an academic or a pacifist 😘
