"If cis men had [x health condition] everyone would get time off" is such a lazy and uninformed take. Toxic masculinity proposes that manlyness means not being sick, not needing help and not getting checked out for anything.
It's one of the reasons why men die earlier. Because many forms of illnesses, especially cancer, are best treated when found early. It's a lot of work for care workers, doctors and people close to men (mostly women) to make them take their health seriously.
"Toxic masculinity" in conversations too often means "whatever is convenient to my argument right now" instead of "this set of toxic beliefs and behaviours shown by men" and it shows.
And it's making conversations difficult and watering down the meaning of the terms we are using. Not to mention it's these hyperbolic arguments are serving no one, they are proposing ridiculous what-if-scenarios instead of looking at the actual problems.
The actual problem is: Cis men are still overwhelmingly uneducated about specific health conditions, especially when it comes to people with a uterus, but also about their own, and they have a shocking lack of knowledge about health risks and how to properly navigate them.
Many cultures supports this "tough it out it will go away" attitude that is also linked to ableism, classism, fatmisia, racism ect. and grounded in toxic masculinity. And everybody is expected to strive to gain this pain endurance. Also a capitalist ideal: Don't be sick, produce.
So no, cis men would not make more sick days available. Most cis men I know are expected to work at full capacity whilest their family is suffering from real life tragedies, sickness ect. I have a coworker who had to fight to get time to care for his sick father.
Cis men don't say "Oh this is just a little period tough it out" solely because "harr-harr-harr those womz right?!" but because they shockingly often don't know what periods mean or feel like and even if they do, they are used to work under pain, why shouldn't other people?
And it's not done with just giving period leave to everyone who has a working uterus, because the problem runs deeper. The problem is right there at "you have to function with pain no matter at what level". Which is also a super ableist mindset.
Everybody should have paid leave to
- make doctors appointments
- not work when in pain or feeling sick
- take time to care for relatives
