(1) Judging from the media, mobilizations in #Tripoli are led by young people from the most marginalized neighborhoods in the city (Bab-el-Tibaneh...). They suffer from high poverty & rely mostly on daily wages... which have been eventually cut-off because of the lockdown.
(2) Some are demonizing the protestors and accusing them of being manipulated by politicians (i.e: Hariri's siblings feud). Others are defending and instantly considering them as part of or an extension of the Oct 17 uprising.
(3) A third analysis contends that they're mostly Sunnis and are mobilizing against the backdrop of a very weak Sunni leadership (Hariri) & the drying up of the clientelist services...
(4) But one common narrative is that these protests are led by the POOR against the government... poverty accordingly is the main driver. I find this very controversial...
(5) Are Sunnis the only "poor" in this country? No.
Why should we only understand their actions as the actions of the POOR? Labeling them as poor alienates them further and distances them from the rest of society.
