Before the Great Reset was known to be a thing, the drivers for it were understood by critical thinkers - because ecological constraints on human development are real. But a reset to save capitalism is the antithesis of a transformation by and for the people.
A thread:
A Great Reset by and for the people would involve a new 'social contract' underpinning institutional changes of a constitutional kind. But what's happening is being imposed from above - through a privatised global constitution.
Quotes in this thread are from my recent book Global Justice and Finance (Oxford UP). It explains why eradicating poverty and achieving ecological sustainability cannot be achieved without a radical transformation of the socio-economic order globally.
Crucial questions are who should control the institutional order & what should their core mandate be- public service or private interest? Allowing capital to grow on the basis of a securitized future, with indiscriminate profit-making opportunities, is a recipe for disaster.
Make no mistake, the global elite are serious about the need to reckon with ecological realities. They see how these threaten the capitalist system. (Better said: capitalism undermines its own ecological conditions of reproduction.) But what comes next - techno-feudalism?
