It’s #RomanFortThursday (oh yes, it is!) and this week we’ll deekabout Maryport #Cumbria and the well-smart @senhousemuseum 😀👇👇👇
The Hadrianic frontier in Britain is not *just* the wall, the chain of forts and fortlets continuing along the #Cumbrian coast

Maryport (ALAVNA) was a key command-point in the system #RomanFortThursday

The #Roman coastal fort at Maryport #Cumbria survives today as a prominent earthwork platform, as these beautiful LiDAR images processed by @Phil_M_Barrett in 2020 and @MarkWalters_ in 2016 clearly show

At 2.6ha, the #Roman coastal supply fort at Maryport #Cumbria was one of the largest in the Hadrianic frontier. Built in the AD 120s, it was occupied at least until the late 4th C

The wonderful @senhousemuseum Maryport displays the largest collection of Roman military altars from Britain

These provide useful information on the changing ethnicity of the garrison, including troops recruited from Spain, the Netherlands and Croatia

Senhouse Museum at Maryport in #Cumbria occupies a 19th century coastal battery

It contains an amazing collection of #Roman finds and displays including this recreation of the HQ building with this (decidedly buff!) image of #Hadrian

At @senhousemuseum #Maryport a recreation watchtower, based on examples on #TrajansColumn, today provides an excellent view over the #Roman fort and across the Solway Firth to SW Scotland – a distant sight no doubt VERY familiar to the garrison of ALAVNA

For more on the pits, altars, burials and nature of ritual deposition at #Roman #Maryport, @CurrentArchaeo ran this excellent summary on fieldwork by @ArchaeologyNCL back in 2014 😀👍
