There was a time when I used to travel to Durban on work often. Most Durban Tamils do not speak Tamil as they are 5th generation Tamil-South Africans. But they love Tamil movies and go for classes where they learn Tamil hymns. Here are some interesting things I noticed abt them:
Almost all Tamil women wear their Thali in manjal kayir...they would wear a business suit for a meeting, but still wear the manjal Kayir. When I told them that most urban Tamils (like me) wear their Thali on a gold chain/necklace, it was news to them!
Mc Donalds outlets and most Durban restaurants have something called a "புரட்டாசி meal". When I asked around I was told it was a no-non-veg option for Tamils of Durban as most of them do not consume meat that month for பெருமாள்.
தை பூசம் is a biiiig thing even among the 5th generation Tamils there. While they relish their Bunny Chow, they hardly know anything about rasam or sambaar :)
