I think that the level of greed, ruthlessless, manipulativeness, deceit and dominance that has been in power has unconsciously normalized those impulses through the population, so that many who would have been previously to ashamed to display such behavior now do so shamelessly
I think that many people experienced the invitation to abandon the pressure of complex moral reasoning, as refreshing, relieving - as an opportunity to resign from unpleasant and often unsatisfying labor.
I think that all human beings have sociopathic capacities and impulses, and that some work to remain conscious and manage them, while others surrender to them because it is simply easier to do so.
And I think that if we are to ever recover that we need, each of us, to examine the ways that such ruthlessness has been normalized, and how that has impacted us unconsciously, as the cultural behavioral baseline shifted.
I also think that many people with more sociopathic tendencies have been learning by example, consciously and unconsciously, and trained by the past four years in strategies that effectively stymie those around them.
You don't have to have gone down the rabbit hole to be contaminated by the shifting collective ethical & moral norms.

Each of us needs to work to de-normalize, dis-incentivize these behaviors in ourselves and those around us.

Obviously those norms were already threadbare before that person was elected. But this was a siren song to many who were floating along relying on collective norms for their moral discernment - and it has lured many to the rocks.
