A quick David Culley and #Texans thread...
1. A ton of Culley advocates coming out of the woodwork in a text-a-thon who are over the moon with the #Texans hire. Describing Culley as a big energy, positive culture guy who connects with players. A few have said that if DeShaun Watson has open ears, Culley will reach him.
2. Culley advocates interestingly included Andy Reid, from what I was told, although I’ve been told it’s not like Reid prioritized him over Bieniemy or anything like that when asked his opinion. Reid apparently has had a strong belief in Culley as a coach and person for a while.
3. Team culture with Culley will prioritize empowering his staff and coordinators, won’t micromanage, and will be a program leader through a positive energy relationship with players. One noted Culley and Bill O’Brien are different types of leaders and that might have resonated.
4. I’m told that Culley impressed a lot of people with his interviews, including Cal McNair and Jack Easterby. Ultimately, this was a Nick Caserio hire. Easterby weighed in, Cal signed off, but it was Caserio who made the choice. Outside the box, but very culture driven.
5. Interesting point on Culley: He hasn’t been a coord, but he’s seen the inside of 6 NFL franchises (albeit w/ some Reid overlap). He’s seen different styles of owners, different mistakes, and a LOT of different staff/front office relationships. There’s a good base of knowledge.
