11 Lessons from leading teams.

My learnings from 2-decades of leadership.

A THREAD
Don't do meetings.

Do One-one conversations to understand people.

Understand what drives them.

And where they need help.
Don't do Job Descriptions.

People are multi-faceted.

Craft a role that resonates with their personality.

Stuff like this works best:

Evangineers (engineer + evangelist) - thanks @GuyKawasaki !
People will outgrow their roles.

Help them land the role they deserve.

Even if it is outside your organization.

You lose a team member, but you have scaled your ecosystem.
Navigating hierarchies can be tough.

Especially when a peer becomes a reporter or supervisor.

Access mentors to help you craft a win-win.

They have been there, done that.
Grow through team referrals.

Your team understands the culture.

When they start referring their most talented friends

You have done something right.
Everybody hits a roadblock.

Illness, a family problem, a search for purpose.

Give people time to recover.

Use the opportunity to try out stars in the waiting.

Will be a win-win for all.
Feedback is a super-power.

The best leaders don't do surveys.

They talk to everyone one-one.

Supervisors, Mentors, Peers, Teams, Clients, Partners.

And evolve their plan forward.
Encourage all to become "greatness detectives".

Ask them to share what they admire in each other.

Positive feedback is motivating for the receiver.

And the giver is building empathy muscle.
Gift your team space.

Space to think.

Space to Grow.

Space to Emote.

Space to Share.

And watch the magic unfold.
Remember, leadership is an awareness tool.

It makes you aware:

Of who and what you like

Of what motivates you and

What scares you.

Leadership is meditation in action.
