The UK made the wrong call last March to try to "manage" the virus at "levels that won't overwhelm the NHS." It was the wrong call then. It has been the wrong call for the best part of a year. It is still the wrong call. And yet nobody in politics, the media, has questioned it.
If you want to know why over 100,000 people are dead it's because of this major strategic decision. The government keep doubling down on it. They refuse to pursue a strategy that reduces the virus to the lowest possible levels. Whenever we get close to it they lift restrictions.
Boris always says the alternative is "a whole year of lockdown." It's not true. The alternative is sharp, effective lockdowns until the virus has little community spread, combined with highly organised testing, contact tracing, and strict isolation of all cases and contacts.
Instead of 12 weeks of lockdown, we have had 20 already. Instead of a relatively small number of deaths, we have the highest death rate in the world. Instead of a small hit to the economy we had 7% negative growth last year, 5m people unemployed, and 10m people on furlough.
