/ I was trading for a big bank during Occupy Wall Street - and my office was near Zuccotti Park. At the time, I was traveling back and forth from London, and that office happened to be near St. Paul's Cathedral. There were parts of me thinking "are we the baddies?", but I took
/ solace in the fact that while I may not be actively helping humanity, I was, at the very least, not hurting anyone. As a IG monkey, I even convinced myself that since most of my counterparties were insurance and pension funds, I was *actually* helping people by providing
/ liquidity to large asset managers. But part of me was also righteously pissed off. I am just a nobody from a nobody small town in Texas, who had clawed his way onto the trading floor. But I worked shoulder-to-shoulder with some absolute morons who were there simply by virtue
/ of having been born to the right parents, or having played LAX at the right school. But even worse than that, was having had bosses who's only claims to fame were having lost, cumulatively, hundreds of millions of dollars for the banks they worked at. The logic was, insanely,
/ that if they lost that much money, they had to have earned the trust to be able to risk that much money. And if you lost enough money for the sake of client business, you were sometimes rewarded with a buy-side job at that client!
/ So profitable, consistent traders got washed out, and the moronic apes ended up going to "heaven" (the buy-side). Of course, this wasn't always the case, but it happened enough to be noticeable. So this fascinating saga of WSB
/ just hits different for me. Deep down, the WSB army aren't in it to get rich and buy Gucci belts. Their PNL represents pain inflicted on some anonymous rich asshole HF guys. That venues are trying to disallow citizens from trading in certain securities smacks of favoritism.
/ Regular people are seeing how the system is rigged in every which way. I've stopped chasing the money for money sake (only took 40 years), and I feel horrible that I only seek to stack sats and fiat so that my children can hopefully avoid having to play these games with such
/ lopsided odds. I'll freely admit I'm a liberal (in crypto? gasp!), but in 2020 everyone got to see that those in power absolutely did not do enough to help those without. Decentralized finance, social justice, WSB, etc are all visceral outcomes of people realizing that the
/ whole damn system is rigged. If you made it this far, you'll be disappointed to find that I don't actually have a point here. I'm exhausted and my heart hurts.
