Thread (sorry Labor lovers)... Labor is gambling with terrible odds on Joel Fitzgibbon's vision of a future choked by coal. It's incorrectly looking at this as a balancing act where it can bothsides climate and find a delicate yet obscure position.
Albo's style represents learnings from the last election; cast the net small because big targets cost votes. The problem with this is it's based on a misreading of the last election loss; where massive disinfo campaigns from Palmer, News Corp and The Coalition were at play.
No Labor leader will win Palmer, News Corp or The Coalition, those factors will always be at play. Labor needs to play this game, not hide from it. Retreating into obscurity makes Labor an unviable prospect for voters looking for action and solutions.
Labor has also wasted valuable ground on COVID-19 — it must doggedly and unashamedly pursue the coalition for its abandonment of quarantine and its attempts to bully the states into submission. "Quarantine is a federal responsibility" should be a household catch cry by now.
Then we have COVIDSafe, broken promises on vaccines, mixed messages, dangerous health misinformation, Aged Care - these are all monumental failures of the Morrison Government and they must be doggedly and uncompromisingly pursued.
We also have record corruption - again, this needs to be pursued with the ferocity of a thousand pissed off Bob Hawkes — anything less won't cut it. Make viral videos, drop irresistible headlines to the media, get LOUD on socials, be bold, play the bloody game.
Small target is small appeal and I'm struggling to think of reasons to support the Federal ALP while it's gone small and ambiguous. I don't comment on Albo, ever, because I want him to win, but I'm seeing a strategic mess being chased down with another strategic mess.
Labor, roll your sleeves up. Go hard, go fierce, get messy, educate and message. Make it so everyone knows where ALP stands. Go back to ALP roots — stick your neck out on this. Take big risks and bet everything on going big. This shy, small target and obscure stuff isn't working.
