Here are the results of the 2010 US senate election in Florida. This was a unique three-way race between state representative Marco Rubio (R), state representative Kendrick Meek (D), and incumbent Florida governor Charlie Crist, who recently switched from the GOP to independent.
Crist, a moderate, initially ran for the GOP nomination. However, his support for the recession bailouts hurt his popularity among conservatives, and the pro-Tea Party speaker of the Florida house, Marco Rubio, surged in the polls. Crist dropped out and ran as an independent.
In the general election, Crist ended up taking more votes from the Democratic candidate than the Republican one, allowing Marco Rubio to win the election despite not getting a majority of the vote.
This is relevant now because moderate former GOP Representative David Jolly is considering an independent run for governor in 2022, likely against both incumbent Gov Ron DeSantis and a Democratic candidate. https://www.orlandosentinel.com/politics/os-ne-david-jolly-considers-governor-run-20210125-d2zhqantezdezaawspxrtradue-story.html
