Hey y'all, as Xiao approaches I see a lot of people worrying about their chances of being able to actually obtain him. I've been playing Gachas for over six years now (SW/FEH/DL disgusting LOL) and have easily spent over a 1000$ on games I no longer play. How can you avoid this?
It is important to first understand how the pity system in Genshin works. The most important thing to know is that at 90 wishes, you are guaranteed a 5 star char. If it is not the focus unit, you are guaranteed that char after 90 more summons! Here's a graphic from u/ainhoawind!
It takes 14,400 Primogems for a 5 star guarantee, and 28,800 for a focus unit guarantee. Although it is not likely for it to take the maximum possible primos, it can happen! Because of this, you should be prepared as possible before summoning for your faves!
Gachas are notorious for time-gating resources. There are only so many primogems available for F2P players when they start the game, and any more that can be acquired are through monetary transaction. What does this mean for those trying to summon?
Preparedness is key! Here are my recommendations:
If you are planning to save for a specific unit, use and abuse the pity system! I think summoning until you hit the focus guarantee is fine, and may even be optimal. However, once you hit pity, STOP! Further pulls are a risk.

Guaranteeing yourself the unit within 14,400 Primos is much easier than with 28,800. Here's a breakdown of daily Primogem accumulation over time using commissions:
F2P: 14,400/60 = 240 total days
Welkin: 14,400/150 = 96 total days

Now of course, there are a multitude of events/story quests that will distribute Primogems. However, these are not consistent sources of income, and should only be viewed as bonuses! We should expect saving to take time.
Though new characters may be tempting, you should have a plan while summoning instead of going on a whim. Questions to ask yourself:
Do I really want this character? How would I feel if my fave was released in the next update? Who else am I interested in pulling in the future?

As we get further into the game, we may have less information going forward about the upcoming cast. Be sure to look for additional information/watch out for mentions of the characters that interest you in the story!
If you are planning to spend, be sure to set a limit for yourself! The Welkin Moon is the most cost efficient way to spend, providing you with 3,000 total Primogems over the course of a month for 5$. For comparison, a 30$ pack only provides 2240 Primogems! Plan in advance!
Resist the temptation to use your Intertwined Fates as you acquire them! These will save you Primogems in the long run, and you will be glad you did. The exception is if you aren't at a guaranteed focus unit yet, and are still trying to achieve pity.
If you are planning on summoning for an event character that is far away and have pity, the pity doesn't carry over to the standard/weapon banner! IF you do choose to summon, save yourself some regret and do it here instead!! However, I wouldn't recommend this personally.
Lastly, don't give into hype!! It is hard to avoid pulling when you see all your friends/moots doing so. If this is too much temptation, log off of twitter and relax! Don't waste your months of preparation just because another character is Twitter's new fave.
