I really hate when people try and compare these two scenes to each other. Because the main reason why I don’t like TLJ Luke is because it completely ignores everything Luke learned in ROTJ. When Vader threatens Leia we see Luke go absolutely ape shit on Vader. He lets his fear-
and anger take over and puts Vader on the ground. But in that moment Luke realizes that he would become the very thing he swore to destroy. He learns to control his anger and his fear in order to save his father. This something Anakin struggled with,
-which is what lead him to the dark side. Luke learns that it’s ok to have these feelings of Fear, Anger, and Love as long as you can control it when the time is necessary. So when we get to that scene in TLJ, Luke forgets absolutely everything that he learned in ROTJ. He forgets
how to control his fear therefore making the scene “I am a Jedi like my father before me” basically pointless as if it never happened. And yes. I know characters make mistakes and I know they mess up, but the mistake that Luke made in TLJ defeats everything he stood for in ROTJ.
I don’t believe the thought of igniting his saber should have ever crossed his mind. You can’t say Luke had character development in TLJ when it destroys his already existing development.
