I am a public educator which means I talk to 'monsieur-madame-tout-le-monde' & do not have the benefit of a bubble.

Too many progressives take their knowledge & expertise for granted & are too impatient with those still trying to learn 'the basics'. This needs to change.

Here is a sample of earnest Qs I've been asked in 2021 by adults in my workshops :

- What is sexual assault
- On Law & Order, you only have 24hrs to get a rape kit. Is that real?
- Is sexual harassment legal in bars? If not, why does everyone just tolerate it?

More Qs include :

- How can I ask for consent without it being awkward?
- Is racism a problem in Canada, tho?
- Can't we just tell women to buy a gun?
- Why shouldn't I just call the cops if my friend tells me she was raped?
- I was told 50% of rape cases are proven fake, no?

Progressives can be frustrated that not everyone is at the same level as them but we all started somewhere. Learning to parse out people just trying to learn from bad faith actors is a necessary skill set for us educators but I wish this patient energy was more widespread.

I've been doing this work a long so I've been able to perfect my skills but I also think a major reason why I'm so passionate about folks at the 101 level of "wokeness" is because I come from blue collar roots & am the only person in my family with a university education.

When you are raised by highly intelligent, earnest, kind people who want to be "good" but because of class differences, feel alienated by high brow academic nonsense, you learn to translate the high brow academic nonsense you know into accessible information.

TLDR: I've been doing this work for almost 20 years & have only managed to avoid burn out by being excited that people want to learn rather than getting frustrated that a grown ass adult is asking me basic Qs that my peers think are "obvious."

I'd rather spend the next 30 years of my career explaining the same "basic concepts" to people pumped to learn than spend a single goddamn day at a circle-jerk professional feminist space where everyone is trying to win Gold at the Woke Olympics.
