a thing that i think gets glossed over in mxtx's work, is how good they are at writing trauma

trauma is not inherently ennobling. some people can get stronger, be kinder, from it, but just as often trauma ruins people

and you can see it in so many of mxtx's characters
trauma ruined shen jiu. he never recovered from his slavery and abuse, and he became a deeply unhappy and abusive man. security in his teens and privilege in his later life did nothing to heal him. he was hurt, and hurt others

trauma ruined jgy too
here is another character, who by grit, skill, & intelligence managed to secure a position of prominence

but it wasn't enough. jgy never felt safe, never felt satisfied, & when you look at how he was forced to live for such a large part of his life, it's not surprising
it's important to note that part of the reason it's so easy for shen yuan to be kind (and reasonable), is because he doesn't have that level of trauma. it's easy to be kind, when the world hasn't really hurt you

he's not really sqq, that's why he can avoid being the scum villain
that's why, when you see characters like jgy and even xy, and you look at wwx, it's very much a case of, there by the grace of god i go

because what would wwx be like if he was never rescued, if the sect that took him in, didn't care about him? if he had no resources?
canon shows us who wwx was when he didn't have a sect and allies and resources, and it wasn't pretty. trauma shaped wwx, and shaped his decisions, and led to his downfall

you carry your trauma with you. look at mu qing, a character who carried his trauma into godhood
poverty is traumatizing!!!

in so many ways, but let's talk about how limiting poverty is, how small it makes you feel. trauma shapes how mu qing looks at himself, looks at his relationships

he become an actual god, through his own merit, and he still feels inadequate
idk, it's just really rare that you have a writer treat trauma like what it is. something that causes fissures, & sometimes, w/luck & work you can fill those spaces with understanding & kindness

other times they just become bigger, they spread. sometimes trauma makes you worse
