Continuing the #DoanTwitterTakeover - How did I find a postdoc @NYU_CSAAH @pophealthNYC during a pandemic? I started perusing positions in the early fall and accepted my position by December, about 5 months before I defended. This will vary for everyone! 1/
Important considerations. Do you even want to do a postdoc? What do you want to gain from your postdoc? What type of environment is important to you? Who can help advocate for you and help with your job search? Similar to applying to PhD program, where would you be happiest?2/
I didn't know there was a "typical protocol" on applying to PhD programs and finding an advisor. I was more proactive during the postdoc search and started "early" because of the @stanfordSURPAS PRISM deadline. 3/ #DoanTwitterTakeover https://twitter.com/lanndoan/status/1301962605108420608?s=20
The Stanford PRISM application made me think about what I envisioned to be the next step. It also provided the resources to interview at Stanford - along with support of an entire program and support from new friends also looking for postdocs. 4/ https://postdocs.stanford.edu/PRISM
Similar to applying for grants and writing papers with friends - I also had conversations with friends also applying to postdoc programs @EpiPoopologist @marydotwillis @KrisMaPhD. Here's a thread on how other people found their postdocs @trantdoan. 5/ https://twitter.com/trantdoan/status/1301899536927948807?s=20
I asked friends (new and old) for their advice on applications, what I should be looking for, and what I need to ask. I am a big picture person, so specific details is very helpful for me. Thankful for all of their insight and time! @IndiraTurney @LindziMo @DrEricKim 6/
I had meetings with my committee members (in person
) on how they thought I could improve my current research trajectory and be a strong candidate for the next career step. Perspective on what they saw as my strengths, where I could improve - their impressions. 7/

I trusted faculty in advising on the where they saw me thriving and training I should seek. Also I could let them know I was looking for a postdoc - which was a friendly reminder for them to introduce me to their colleagues and fwd me job posts! 8/
I was profiled on the @geronsociety because my committee member recommended me - which definitely did not hurt my job search. I also had very open conversations with trusted faculty when I had questions (so many!!). @michelleodden @brittany_morey
