Cloris Leachman won a well-deserved Oscar as Ruth Popper in The Last Picture Show, one of the great performances of all time in one of the great films of all time.
Cloris Leachman also played Nellie Forbush in the original Broadway production of South Pacific (seen here with George Britton).
And of course, Cloris Leachman made herself a household name as Phyllis Lindstrom on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

(It's hard to fathom that these three sitcom legends are no longer with us).
Cloris Leachman had such an Emmy-winning impact on MTM that they decided to spin her off into her own sitcom, moving Phyllis from Minneapolis to San Francisco. (And giving her a Jerry Herman parody for a theme song).
My introduction to Cloris Leachman came from The Facts of Life, where she replaced Charlotte Rae as the show's den mother. Cloris was Mrs. Garrett's wacky and fun sister Beverly Ann.

(Cloris and Charlotte, of course, went to college together and were roommates)
Cloris Leachman had an astonishing range as a character actress. She even performed Shakespeare with Katharine Hepburn (seen here in a 1950 Broadway production of As You Like It)
Cloris Leachman also had a remarkable association with Mel Brooks, appearing in three of his films as a parody of an eccentric grotesque.

One of the biggest laughs I've ever had from any Mel Brooks film comes from Cloris as Madame Defarge in History of the World: Part I.
The Lars Affair is one of the greatest episodes of Mary Tyler Moore. It not only marked Betty White's first appearance as Sue Ann Nivens but it also won Cloris Leachman an Emmy.
