This summer, I worked to pass a special appropriation to expand our Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams. The nearly $600,000 allowed for the hiring & training of 6 Licensed Clinical Social Workers who will provide rapid response and stabilization to residents in crisis. (Thread)
Today, I’m excited to report that 4 of these positions have been filled and will start in the coming weeks. This is a HUGE step toward separating mental healthcare from law enforcement.
The police cannot and should not be expected to act as social workers for people who are experiencing a mental or behavioral health crisis or a substance use disorder.
We also plan to stand up a dedicated call center, a stabilization center & a robust follow-up system.

Thank you to my colleagues on @MoCoCouncilMD for their support & making this happen. I look forward to sharing more details about the Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams as they become operational. Stay tuned!
