I think, of all the talk around vaccine nationalism and the EU, this is the sentence which bothers me the most “Pharmaceutical companies, vaccine developers, have moral, societal and contractual responsibilities, which they need to uphold.”
(Thread)
What it really means is “Pharmaceutical companies, have moral and societal responsibilities to us, because we paid them”
It diminished the true issues in global access issues, which is that In LMICs, which is where the vast majority of the world lives, 25 doses of vaccine have been delivered.
To say that this is an issue of transparency in vaccine contracts now, while you’ve been perfectly happy aggressively pursuing APAs to prioritise your own needs, without a concern for transparency or moral responsibility is hypocritical and tone deaf.
Not the mention the fact that both the EU and the U.K. have been aggressively blocking the proposed IP waiver for COVID vaccines at the WTO.
This isn’t about transparency in drug contracts, it’s not about expanded access, it’s not even about moral responsibility: it’s about rampant vaccine nationalism amongst the worlds wealthiest.
All parties concerned were perfectly happy with this arrangement when they believed it prioritised their needs (while inhibiting access in LMICs), now that might not be the case there is suddenly a moral responsibility at play?

That doesn’t sound particularly moral.
