1. I just went on a radio show, where the host read me a piece from the @nytimes on the farmers revolt in India. The report made Modi's case, saying that there is no more room in India for big government & that 'liberalisation' of the farm subsidies is in order. This is shameful.
2. It is shameful because this report in the @nytimes was written from the Continent of Hypocrisy. During the past 20 years, the US government has spent $1.7 trillion to subsidise the US farming sector. Actually the number is higher if you include water subsides & milk buyback.
3. In 2019, the US government spent at least $22 billion on the farm sector, the highest in 14 years; this was to subsidise farmers during the pandemic. There has been barely any reporting about this vast subsidy programme.
So, as far as the @nytimes is concerned, it is ok for the US government to subsidise the US farmers but it is unacceptable to have government intervention in the Indian farming sector. Hence, that 'paper of record' is more the 'paper of hypocrisy'.
