In my opinion, here is the most important takeaway of this article: That a lack of acknowledgement of what the US operations in cyberspace actually look like fuels a distorted view of what other states' operations against us actually amount to. Media often exacerbates this. (2/5)
This is the second most important takeaway: There are people out there, like @MichaelJMorell and Paul Kolbe and even the Cyber UCG itself, that have characterized recent activity in the proper context but have been drowned out by the distorted/alarmist view. (3/5)
On a terminology note, I think this is the first time I've seen press reporting ~accurately characterize the difference between the strategic intent behind "defend forward" and intelligence-collection-via-cyber -- which is a fact of life. (4/5)
Finally, the characterization of the "silence" of Western CTI firms about Western states' cyber operations needs to be taken into account with both the real visibility issue and the reality that such reporting does exist -- ex.: Symantec/Longhorn.
