Kid Cudi: strength in vulnerability.
(a thread)
Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, mainly known as Kid Cudi, is an artist from Cleveland, Ohio, in the USA. he’s one of my favourite artists and has had an impact like no other in music and on millions of people around the world who have listened to his music, including myself.
breakout:
in 2009, cudi released “Man On The Moon: The End Of Day”, his first debut album. it was an amazing first release and it had hits like “Day ‘N’ Nite”. the record taps into scott’s thoughts, which are coated in a dreamy aesthetic with the instrumentals and it was great.
dark moments:
a year later, he released the sequel to MOTM, “Man On The Moon ll: The Legend Of Mr. Rager”. this record is a lot darker than the first one, because it dives deeply into cudi’s problems, such as loneliness and addiction. it resonates with a lot of people today.
self made:
in 2013, he released “Indicud” which he produced entirely by himself. it was a lot more optimistic of a record than MOTM ll but it still has that sound that we know and love scott for. i think it’s a solid project and i liked it quite a bit. i enjoyed revisiting it.
these two projects weren’t really my thing but it saw cudi branching out and trying new things; to be honest, you can’t fault the guy for experimenting with different sounds because without him doing that, we wouldn’t have gotten the projects after. it shows artistic development.
bouncing back:
in 2016, kid cudi released “Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’”. it was very different from anything the made before as it puts a modern twist on his sound, making it evolve as a whole. this is seen on tracks like “Does it”. it’s fresh but the production is so good.
dynamic duo:
in 2018, scott joined forces with kanye west to bring us the masterpiece that is “KIDS SEE GHOSTS”. “Reborn” definitely stood out to me as it’s about their mental health and changing as a person. many people saw themselves in this album and cherished it deeply.
end of an era:
in 2020, kid cudi released the final album of the MOTM series, “Man On The Moon: The Chosen”. this return was one of the best albums of last year and it saw him further increasing his versatility. the production is so trippy and high quality. an amazing project.
impact:
kid cudi is an artist whose influence has spawned an entire generation of talented artists. he is also one of the reasons mental health is discussed in hip-hop now because before him, it was a very taboo topic to talk about in the genre. he has changed millions of lives.
