Writing the dissertation can be very isolating. Find your support group. This is important during the dissertating phase, but really through the PhD program. It’s nice to share the PhD journey with others and have a sounding board for your work. 2/ #DoanTwitterTakeover

You can have different support networks. My friends reviewed my drafts, dropped off food, and made sure I left my home for fresh air. My committee was also extra understanding. These networks have continued to support me during my postdoc. 3/ #DoanTwitterTakeover #epitwitter

Get a therapist. This is something I have recommended to everyone - at all stages of the PhD. It's uncomfortable but that's ok! The mental health issues I observed during the program, it's not normal. Be kind to yourself - we're still in a pandemic. 5/ #DoanTwitterTakeover

Try to get out of the perfectionist mindset. It was (and still is) difficult for me to get out dissertation drafts because of the strong imposter syndrome. Reminder that people want to help you succeed and can be so gracious with their time! 6/ #DoanTwitterTakeover #epitwitter

Other concrete things that helped me. Being funded by @NIA @NIH R36 dissertation award. I cannot recommend applying for funding (dissertation or training grants, scholarships) and training programs enough. As shared by @Dr_S_Jefferson - the worst someone can say is no. 7/
