A thread on the new Cuttack bus stand.
In 2015 it was planned that a new bus stand would come up in Gopalpur to ease the traffic on the Badambadi Bus Stand and keeping in mind the increase in future traffic. Around 42.34 acres of land was acquired.(1) https://www.telegraphindia.com/odisha/bus-stand-blueprint/cid/1416679
Then mysteriously when the land was being compounded, sand 19 acres of land of was being fenced. OTV did a report on 11 months ago.(3)
The bus stand was being built keeping in mind the enormous traffic between the twin city region and making the it a multi modal transport hub for the future with a capacity to handle 1500 buses a day. Now surprisingly it has been shifted to a graveyard near Badambadi(4)
Now the land proposed for the new bus stand already houses a library, a government school and the Smashana Kali Mandir. It also houses the Khannagar Park which is visited by many people from adjacent areas and joggers too. Also the ring road is quite narrow with little to no (6)
room for expansion. It would mean the extra cost of vacating the slums along the Kathajodi banks. Also to expand the ring road, the banks need to be levelled up to the level of the dyke around the cuttack city which also acts as a defacto ring road. Despite the land (7)
available at Gopalpur which provides as excellent opportunity to free up Cuttack and expand it to the outskirts, the bus terminal is being built inside the city which will even worsen the traffic woes in the coming years with increasing population. Why the hesitancy (8)
To build a bigger and better bus terminal at Gopalpur in the land which has already been acquired? Why spend again on land acquisition while land is already readily available there? (9)
