1. A short thread addressed to my fellow Never Trumpers:

Cheer up!
2. We're all a little down. Conviction in the Senate seems unlikely. The Republican Party seems unsalvageable. Conservatism seems uninspiring. Even our new Democratic friends seem a bit uncertain about the path ahead.
3. But. Trump is gone. The operation was--barely--a success. We don't know if the patient will fully recover or when his health will truly be restored. But there’s at least a possibility. We have a chance.
4. The fact is that Donald Trump is not entering his second term as president of the United States. And we Never Trumpers did our duty and did our part--a minor part, to be sure, but perhaps an important one--in helping make this so.
5. And this is no small thing. A second Trump term would have done incalculable damage to our democracy and our country. It was important that Trump lose. Lose he did.
It was a near-run thing, but we won.
6. It followed, of course, on a frustrating five years. We failed to deny Trump the Republican nomination. We failed to deny him the presidency. We failed to mobilize significant Republican opposition to him on the Hill or in the party during his term in office.
7. We failed to find support to enable a strong Republican challenge to him for renomination. We failed to convince the bulk of Republicans not to support him for reelection. And this year, we failed to persuade more than ten Republicans to support his impeachment in the House.
8. And we may fail to convince enough Republicans to achieve conviction in the Senate.

Still. We hung in there, we did our duty, and he's no longer the president of the United States. We didn’t get everything done, but we got the necessary minimum done.
9. So let's cheer up, forge ahead, and seize the day. After all,

"In the moment of our tweeting, envious time has ebb'd away.
Seize the day; trust tomorrow e'en as little as you may."
-- Horace, Odes 1. 11

Good, I've cheered myself up. Back to work...
