This is the last picture of my family in Apeldoorn, Netherlands before they were terrorized by Nazis, went into hiding, murdered in concentration camps or enslaved in labor camps. My father, Rene, is the boy in the center. #HolocaustMemorialDay
4. My Opa & Oma, Heiman van der Velde & Rebecca van der Kaars were Holocaust survivors. The Nazis stole their home & business and belongings. They managed to bury their car in the hopes that if they survived, with a car, they could start a new business . #HolocaustMemorialDay

My great Opa Salomon van der Kaars. My father remembered his Opa Salomon fondly. He said Salomon would take the train to visit the family on weekends and would always bring him balloon and a cake from the bakery near the train station...

Part 1/ Izaac's & Judith Feitsma who were rounded up by the Nazis for transport in Amsterdam. He was a hunchback & disabled. They adored each other. He knew he would not survive. #HolocaustMemorialDay
7. #WeRemember Part 2/ Uncle Izaac moved Judith to the back of the truck. He told Judith he was "done for." He was disabled & couldn't run. Without warning pushed her off the truck. Miraculously she survived. Izaac was murdered 3/28/1944 in Belsen, Bergen #HolocaustMemorialDay
8. In memory of my aunt and uncle, Martha & Barend Turksma. (Far right behind my elderly Opa) He was a talented musician. Murdered March 16, 1945 Dachau. She was liberated from #Auschwitz . Sick with typhoid she walked home from Poland to find her son.

9. #WeRemember In Oct. 1941, 1,549 Jews in Apeldoorn where my dad was living, were forced to register. Only 150 Jews returned to Apeldoorn, from camps & from hiding. My father was one of those 150. This is a picture of him, aged 10, on Liberation Day. #HolocaustRemembranceDay 🕊️
