A couple notes for the "dying with" COVID not from COVID crew:

- CDC provisional data shows COVID 4,110 deaths for Oklahoma.
- The state reports 3,323 fatalities.

Why the difference? A few reasons. Short thread.
The CDC uses death certificate data, which includes probable cases of COVID-19. It's capturing more deaths than the state, which goes through each death to determine whether it was truly caused by COVID-19.
This takes time. So there's likely a delay there, and the state doesn't expect to have full counts for quite awhile. CDC data also include presumed/suspected COVID-19, as well as non-resident deaths.
The CDC count represents the number of deaths that have been filed with the state that mention (anywhere on the certificate) COVID-19/Presumed COVID-19, even if COVID-19 did not directly contribute to the causal chain of events that lead to the death.
I've talked to the Oklahoma State Department of Health about this. Both the CDC and OSDH reports are correct, but they're reporting different data points.
