Chuba Hubbard, RB out of Oklahoma State. Was touted as a top tier talent in 19 and now barely showing up on draft boards in 20.
Did something drastic happen from 19 to 20? Or were the signs there from the beginning?
Let’s dig into the film and see!

I watched film from both Hubbard’s 19 and 20 film, and I’m not going to lie, I came away with more concerns than likes. We’ll start with the likes and sprinkle in some of the concerns along the way.
What I liked:
- Speed
- Burst
- *Sometimes* solid vision
- Solid catching

VISION
So we’ll start with vision. He shows here glimpses of solid vision. In the 1st clip, the angle from behind shows his good LOS vision and commitment to the hole. 2nd clip I love how he sees the cutback lane and isn’t hesitant to cut upfield & show off his burst

VISION?
So I said I sometimes like his vision.. Here are some times I questioned it. 1st clip he doesn’t recognize the hole closed quick enough and falls down from running into his own lineman (no contact balance & no one touches him). 2nd clip he doesn’t see the cutback lane

CONTACT
This is something I just saw this way too often watching Hubbard’s tape and these are just some examples. An arm or ankle tackle he doesn’t run through and goes down immediately. I mean, looking at the 2nd clip, if he runs through that he is gone to the house w/his speed

BURST
Now this is Hubbard’s wheelhouse. He has burst and speed for days. 1st clip he barely gets the ball in his hands and he out-burst 4 defenders (ankle tackle tho). In the 3rd clip he shows his burst to the outside ruining the defenders angles before they had time to adjust

SPEED
These are the plays that made him and his stats look good. He shows solid vision at the LOS, bursts through the line and simply outruns everyone else on the field. He also shows solid change of direction while maintaining speed. We all know Hubbard is a home run threat

CATCHING
Hubbard is a solid pass catcher. Nothing too flashy though. He generally catches with soft hands. See in clip 2 and 3 he extends his arms to catch. Love to see that. But really he was mostly used in just screens and dump offs. Never saw him utilized with real routes run

BLOCKING
So Hubbard was solid in pass pro. Not great, but solid. What really worries me is his inability (I don’t think lack of effort) to block when the play isn’t for him. He either gets lit up (clip 1) or takes an awful angle so the defender runs right by him (clip 2 and 3)

BALL SECURITY
Ball security. Ball security. He didn’t lose any of these fumbles, but in the 6 games I watched, he lost the ball 4 times. That’s not good.. And in the 1st clip he shows good vision to bounce it out and probably would’ve gone for 20+ yards, but he lost the ball...

Usually I like to highlight what I liked from the tape and then do a smaller breakdown of what I didn’t like.. But I walked away with more concerns than things I actually liked watching Hubbards film. But still, my concerns:
- Constantly went down on first contact
- Constantly went down on first contact
- Only got what was blocked for him. Didn’t create a lot of extra yards
- Blocking is a huge question mark (I’m sure for GMs and coaches as well)
- Ball Security (won’t stay on the field if he keeps that up)
- His vision is inconsistent. I saw him run into the back of his...

... o-line way too often
- Sometimes was too patient at the line and wouldn’t just take what was there. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it was an unnecessary tackle for loss. Seemed like he always waited to break off a big run every play

Hubbard seems like a 1 trick pony with his speed. He is an avg pass catcher, but there are just too many red flags around him. At best I think he could be a change of pace/3rd down back in the NFL. I don’t see him taking on a lead role anywhere as he has plenty of room to improve
I’ve broken down 4 RBs so far and he ranks 4th behind Najee, Williams and Gainwell (if you want to see those break downs, DM me!)
As always if you have made it this far, I’d appreciate a like, retweet or any feedback!
