Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, 76 years after the liberation of Auschwitz. Today isn’t the Jewish day of commemoration - that happens later in the year. Today is the day for non-Jewish education.
Recent studies have shown about half of US citizens don’t know how many of us were murdered in the Holocaust. It was 6 million. Each person had a name and a story.
As the survivors die out and antisemitism grows, the threat of losing this episode and its teachings to history and hate grows with it. It’s on each of us in each generation to remember.
It’s a hard topic, but the lessons are vital.
