LITERALLY NO LESSONS HAVE BEEN LEARNT. After 100,000 people died Boris Johnson is pursuing the same strategies that killed them. The policies that have led to so many deaths are: believing there is a "manageable level" of virus in an open society; believing "vulnerable people"
can be protected while everyone else gets infected. And a rush to open everything as soon as possible. Today Boris Today he announced his plans for reopening society while keeping the virus at a "manageable level", opening schools at the earliest possible moment, and protect the
vulnerable (this time with a vaccine) and opening up before everyone is protected, or the virus is contained enough for it to be safe (which could be an extra few weeks of lockdown - as in, we could have near-elimination by end of March, but instead the government will open
everything three weeks early and squander it AGAIN!) Here is why this is a disaster: for a year the government has claimed that the measure of success is not overwhelming the NHS. But thetruth is the NHS has been overwhelmed numerous times. Not enough equipment or staff to give
everyone the care they need. As soon as society opens up, this happens. Often the news media do not report on it - in April last year, and in January this year, the media actively hid stories of the triaging of patients (because people shouldn't be scared etc. Routinely triaging
patients away from treatment, as happened in Manchester in the Summer, is revealed only months after the event.) There is no "manageable level" of this virus, except for bringing it to the lowest possible levels, as close to elimination as possible, so that every new case can be
found, tested, traced and isolated. Meanwhile, Boris said from early March the most vulnerable will be protected through their vaccinations, so we can open up again. Trouble is, the Oxford Vaccine is only 70% efficacious (and perhaps a little less in older people, and in the real
world as opposed to in trials.) This means that at least 30% of vulnerable people will remain susceptible to symptomatic disease. At the same time, we know that it is not these vulnerable groups who are overwhelming the health service - often these vulnerable people don't even
get treatment, because there is little hope it would work. Right now 75% of people in hospital for COVID are under 65. And worse, we *still* do not know the long term effects of the disease (although data says they are significant, ranging from heart and lung damage to strokes
from clotting disorders, ME-like conditions to renal damage and nervous conditions, cognitive impairment etc) The plan to continue these misguided policies, which have already seen 100,000 people die, must be robustly opposed. But there's little chance that the opposition will
do that, and just as little chance that the journalists will actually scrutinise the government and ask tough questions. Instead they will be cheerleading the end of lockdown. Useless.
The government still believes the deaths were due to the poor implementation of policy. Nobody in government seems to have recognised that the problem was that they were the WRONG POLICIES to start with. They are still the wrong policies.
