Look, I don’t like Curt Schilling as a person. He says some godawful Lou stupid stuff. But what he said about the HOF voting process is also valid; personally I believe that former players should have a role in the selection process earlier on. Note: I don’t think he was a HOFer.
In the social media age, too many of the BBWAA view HOF voting as more of an opportunity to generate content, clicks, likes and yes, in some cases, to be seen as “woke”....instead of as a responsibility to honor the greatest players in baseball history.
The Baseball Hall of Fame does itself no favors by leaving some of the criteria for HOF selection vague. So they leave a bunch of writers that mostly have never played the game at a high level as the moral arbiters. That’s unfair.
I would rather have the Baseball Hall of Fame just come out and say that they won’t admit proven liars, cheats, racists, thieves and assholes. At least then, it’ll save the debate and save all of us from the endless annual “look at me...here’s why I voted the way I did” stories.
