the only good thing Michelle’s fatphobia ever gave us. https://twitter.com/yoncevocals/status/1354164468259770368
because i’m not going to spend a bunch of time explaining this tweet to people, i’m just going to add a few different references for folks to read. starting with this piece. i disagree w/the assertion of “healthy” here, but agree w/the gist of the piece: https://danceswithfat.org/2011/03/10/michelle-obama-what-are-you-thinking/
michelle obama’s campaign was not only about “making school lunches healthier” (though that is also fatphobia at work), her campaign was about “attacking childhood obesity.” so much so that she said that fat kids are to blame for the economy: https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2011/03/15/remarks-first-lady-national-league-cities-conference
she asserted that one reason she wanted to focus on childhood obesity was not for health reasons but so that the US military would not decline in number down the line. she was focused on US imperialism. http://blog.twowholecakes.com/2011/03/michelle-obama-blames-fat-children/
after calling one of her two daughters chubby consistently on national television, she ended up putting both of them—both Sasha and Malia—on diets. the kids were around 8 and 11 years old.
so, like, fuck Michelle Obama lmao. and if i want to make a joke about her bullshit fatphobia (that SO many danced over and continue to dance over), i’m going to do exactly that. she used her power and influence, & that of celebs, to fund a national campaign against fat kids.
there are other resources out there on this—threads, other articles—but it’s limited because no one wanted to critique the first Black First Lady, especially since many people—ESPECIALLY then—did not care about “fatphobia.” but feel free to do further research.
i’m muting this thread, but just want to be VERY clear about the fact that forcing your kids to lose weight is abuse. especially when you’re the First Lady and testing your national campaign on your 8y/o daughter for being “chubby.” https://twitter.com/dashaunlh/status/1223357160870088704
