GREEN HOMES GRANT: Some scathing coverage yesterday, but there are signs that failings are not fatal to the Government’s flagship efficiency scheme. 1/7 https://twitter.com/ECIU_UK/status/1354368812997632001
It was clear the grants would be popular. @BEISgovuk response in @Guardian story states 17,000 approved applications since scheme went live in September. This is already more than the total number the ill-fated Green Deal managed in 7 years (14,000). 2/7
More evidence of strong public demand: BEIS states 17k approved vouchers (via an c25% acceptance rate) therefore total applications between 65-70,000. More than 10% of the Green Homes Grant target of 600,000 homes. 3/7
This was expected; @ECIU_UK polling in September showed 55% of respondents were interested and the scheme could be 22x oversubscribed. https://buff.ly/2SdyHUC  4/7
Previous policies to climate proof Britain’s homes have failed due to lack of public interest. @NAOorguk quote the Green Deal’s ‘design and implementation did not persuade householders’. This is clearly not the case here. https://buff.ly/39mCiJp  5/7
High levels of concern for climate and keenness to take action to cut carbon at home (as well as reduce energy bills) mean scheme can still be a success. https://buff.ly/2Yk2AFK  6/7
The Heat and Buildings Strategy is expected to deal with these teething problems, listen to concerns from industry & make the Green Homes Grant a success. This will deliver of promises to upgrade 100,000s of homes and lock in countless green jobs. https://buff.ly/3a6UXHZ  7/7
