There's a run of polls (some reputable, some probably not) suggesting that a small majority of Scots *might* want independence.
The London-based media all seem to be asking 'Is Scottish independence inevitable?'
Where were they when almost all polls for 5+ years showed most Scots were against separation?
Did they ask 'Is the maintenance in perpetuity of the union inevitable?'
Of course not, because nothing in life (as they say) is inevitable except death and taxes.
That's why I said '*might* want independence', and I say it for a number of reasons ...
There is as yet no mandate for separation and my money says that the SNP will fudge their commitment to any early referendum in their Holyrood election manifesto.
With revelations continuing apace about the Sturgeon-Salmond issue, not least whether the FM lied to parliament, the SNP may be in no fit state for some time to pursue anything but survival while 'ultras' and discontented members snap at their heels.
Even if the SNP win a majority of seats in the Holyrood election they are likely on past turnouts to do so with a minority of all voters in Scotland. That is not a position of strength from which to argue for constitutional change.
If the UK government hold firm to their commitment to refuse a referendum, the SNP's 'Plan B' may well founder in the courts. Where will that leave them?
And even if they get to the stage of issuing a prospectus for separation (Scotland's Future Mk II), the cold light of forensic examination is likely put off enough of those *might* voters to tip them towards the status quo.
Meantime, for some and perhaps an increasing number, there is the woeful example of the SNP's pretty pathetic track record in government to put them off trusting the party with anything.
So, please London media, ask your question about inevitability (you all need a good headline) but do your research, make your discussion and answers balanced, and don't let nationalist contributors disguise unproven assertion as fact.
