Powerful piece by @BBCArabic Ravita Navai in the killings of political activists, women’s advocates, and charity workers by Iran-backed militias (the BBC investigation identifies Kataib Hezbollah), encouraged by Iran govt media (BBC cites Mehr News) https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-55813858
Shamefully, UK never designated Kataib Hezbollah as a terrorist movement: inexplicable as KH has tons of pre-2011 British blood on its hands & one UK servicewoman killed by their network on March 11 2020, plus ongoing attacks on UK, Iraq and @CJTFOIR. Come on Britain! @UKinIraq
As a Brit, I see an excellent @FCDOGovUK @DefenceHQ team on Iraq - always active, wanting to do more - stymied from protecting UK dual citizens, avenging UK deaths(!), getting UK Global Magnitsky going, using Unexplained Wealth Orders on militias backers who kick back in London.
This @BBCArabic report by Ravita Navai doesn't have the time to give every nuance the time it deserves but it also doesn't bury the lede. The BBC investigation found:
The interview with Basra Police Chief Abbas Naji al-Lami is chilling and totally familiar, the sort of moment that would make my blood boil. When they answer your specific questions with patent lies, it is a kind of game for them. The grosser the lie, the funnier they find it.
