Do we need to have the “you have a platform, thus some responsibility (even if you never wanted that, but it’s yours now)” deck again?
If I as a streamer, influencer, person of whatever standing does not moderate or have a bare minimum expectation of decency in my spaces? It will devolve into the Wild West.
Without moderation, people will see that anything goes & become the poison pen in a chat or community space. It’s the lowest bar to pass to say “we don’t do that here”
Especially when your audience is young & impressionable. Also when folks aren’t super young & easily influenced by what they see public figures not doing & not saying.
See also, kids learn from everyone they interact with, not just their parents. It’s how a lot of us fall to peer pressure as teens & young adults. Learning starts at home, but others influence kids perception & ideas daily.
If you don’t want to foster a good environment for young people, and think it’s not your job to teach; you’re actively ignoring the sheer power and reach of your platform. Especially at that level.
Anyone who has reach, an audience or a platform of any size? You’ve got a responsibility to curate the spaces you’re in, that folks gather to see you in. Otherwise, it’s just going to be a cesspool of foolishness & hate that’s gone rancid.
Also, throwing money at things isn’t a get out of jail free card. That’s cool, but you can’t buy your way to being a good person. Wielding that as a look at what I’ve done & be thankful flex is bullshit.
TL;DR if you’ve got a platform, realise the power you wield & be responsible. Don’t throw up your hands & go not my problem.
