Thread. I'm not LGB Alliance, but I'll give an answer to Ben's question. I don't support (paid) surrogacy. To understand why, we first need to look at a deceptively simple question: why do you need to pay? 1/ https://twitter.com/benjamincohen/status/1354183719217729537
Some possible answers: 1) Pregnancy is exhausting, physically damaging, and women need to be compensated for that harm. 2) You're a misogynist and no woman likes you enough to carry your child for free. 3) Pregnancy damages women's careers and women need to be compensated... /2/
Now, if you believe the answer is (3), then every woman who has a child is being short-changed. The answer is not paid surrogacy, but to compensate women fairly. Then paid surrogacy would be unnecessary. /3/
If you believe the answer is either (1) or (2), then you're relying on financial coercion to force a woman to do something she wouldn't do if she had a choice. That isn't acceptable in a fair society. /4/
If we lived in a society that compensated all valued effort, the argument might be different. But we do not pay women to care for their own children, nor to educate their own children. We pay little (statutory maternity pay) for pregnancy. So if we allow pay for surrogacy.. . /5/
... then pay for surrogacy but not for a pregnancy a woman wants is just granting men financial control over women's bodies that we deny to women themselves. So no, I do not support paid surrogacy, whether for gay or straight couples. 6/6
