Dear creators, when faced with a big #TTRPG #writing project, I use business project management techniques (from my day job) to stay on top of things. I want to share my top 5 most useful tips with you in this thread: #DnD #rpg #dnd5e #writingtip
1: Don’t feel overwhelmed. Projects with a high degree of uncertainty (like most rpg writing projects) don’t actually benefit from having a detailed up-front plan. Things are too likely to change down the road anyway. That being said, you should have a vague outline in mind.
2: Divide the work in manageable chunks, ideally, these are all bits you can write in a single day. Assign a priority to each of those, based on how important they are to your project. Don’t overthink this – just slap on some labels like "high", "medium", and "low".
3: Start by picking one "high" priority item from your backlog and fully complete it. Choose what you’ll work on the next day, but don’t plan any further than that. If you’re truly stumped by something, put it aside and work on a different bit instead.
4. Accept the project will change along the way and adjust your backlog accordingly. New stuff will be added, other stuff will be removed. It’s not unlikely that, towards the end, you’ll decide to scrap several low-priority things as you realize these weren’t necessary at all.
5. If you find yourself repeatedly struggling to finish each part, adjust the size of your chunks and / or extend the deadline by a day or so. Your main goal is to have a reliable daily / weekly output, however high or low that may be.
In summary: By initially focusing on the important parts, you’re much more likely to end up with a viable product early on – the remainder are probably just embellishments. The flexible, day-by-day planning and steady output keep you focused and motivated along the way.
