Some facts about William Shawcross, who the govt has announced will be leading the review into the Prevent programme:
After Shawcross’s appointment to head the Charity Commission, the Claystone thinktank found that the regulator created a new issue code called ‘extremism and radicalisation’, labelling 55 charities with the code without their knowledge...
There were no written criteria for applying or removing this label. The report mentions that Muslim charities were disproportionately affected by investigations from the Commission since the appointment of Shawcross.
38% of all disclosed investigations initiated between 1st January 2013 and 23rd April 2014 were on Muslim charities. This man is now leading a review of the govt's counter-extremism programme which many Muslims view as toxic.
