Sequel to #ItsASin đŸ§”pt1

Lizbeth Farooqi, as so brilliantly played by @SeyanSarvan, was one of many kick-ass lawyers who worked on the frontline to protect the rights of people with HIV.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, the tabloid press regularly hounded people with HIV and advocates.

One tabloid paper sent a reporter undercover into an HIV org, and did an exposé on how public funds were being used to provide legal support to migrants with HIV.

đŸ§”2/7
Reporters hid behind cars outside the offices of the org, taking photos of staff until they got their shot of the legal team members to accompany their reporting.

This put untold pressure on already overstretched services.

Their hounding was relentless.

But let’s not pretend this was just historical.

Just 4 years ago, as the govt refused to fund PrEP, and were taken to court by @NAT_AIDS_Trust, tabloids called PrEP a ‘promiscuity pill’.

We had one of the most effective HIV prevention methods EVER and those same tabloids did their best to present our lives as being worth less than others.

They played their part in delaying access to this preventative medicine.

If the scenes of stigma, discrimination, homophobia in #ItsASin outraged you, know that those seams of hatred run deep, and frequently re-emerge. The tabloids that present a veneer of acceptance one day will be saying we’re worth less the next.

Meanwhile, the hatred they fuel is now being used against trans people, sex workers, migrants.
